For 3,000 years, Chinese people have used herbs to cure sickness. Internatinal
pharmaceutical companies, recognising increased acceptanice of herbal remedies
in the West, are introducting modern research methods and production standards
into China. They are eyeing a huge potential worldwide market. This foreign
influence is going to pose a serious threat to the local Chinese medicine
industry.
Of the many roots displayed here, some are also used in Western medicine.
Extract of the licorice root ¥Ì¯ó is used in cough syrup, and gentian root ÀsÁx¯ó,
containing bitter gloucosides, is used as a tonic and as a stimulant to digestion.
